By knowing the farmers that produce their food, and by making human connections with the food and farm system that feeds them, consumers are reaching a new level of engagement in the food system. This new engagement speaks to a need for community and connectedness, speaks to an increasing concern about health, and a new willingness to prioritize food in our culture.
The interest in the Bay Area in how food can support community, health, and the environment, and our new willingness to spend more time to learn about the “where”, the “who”, and the “how” of food can also extend to international products. In this spirit, the “Buy Fresh, Buy Local” campaign of the Community Alliance with Family Farmers is partnering with the Golden Glass event. Golden Glass allows consumers from the Bay Area to meet and learn from sustainable wine producers from Italy alongside California farmers and food artisans.
This collaboration encourages consumers to bring the same new attention for local food to the agricultural and production practices that shape our world food system.
We encourage you to ask the questions “who”, “why”, “where” both at your farmers’ market and at your wine vendor - and to spend your food (and wine) dollars to support farmers and vintners who support sustainable practices that care for the earth’s resources and produce the best-tasting products possible. By making this new type of engagement in the food production system the norm for consumers, we can bring a new food production system into existence, one that prioritizes quality over yield, and sustainability over productivity.
